WordPress.com Goes Down, Takes Millions of Blogs With It [UPDATED] | Mashable
WordPress Gives Us The VIP Treatment, Goes Down On Us Again | TechCrunch
As you’ve noticed, we’ve brought the vast majority of blogs back, including yours. We’re currently working on bringing back the rest (including GigaOM), we have to verify their options data first, then the home page, then stats. However if you’re back already like TC is everything should work as normal.
The cause of the outage was a very unfortunate code change that overwrote some key options in the options table for a number of blogs.
Mike and team at TC: you guys have jinxed us, but we still love you. These past two rapid-fire incidents have been cringe-worthy and painful, and I’m sorry they both happened shortly after your switch to VIP.
Errant Code Change Crashes 10 Million Blogs | Data Center Knowledge
The blog hosting service WordPress.com suffered a major outage last night, affecting as many as 10.2 million hosted blogs, including high-profile news sites like TechCrunch and GigaOm. “The cause of the outage was a very unfortunate code change that overwrote some key options in the options table for a number of blogs,” WordPress founder Matt Mullenweg reported in the comments on TechCrunch. Most sites appear to have been offline for about an hour, but it was about six hours before the WordPress.com team posted that operations were “back to full speed.”

Who’s Behind Stuxnet? The Americans? The Israelis? | Security Watch
All this and more makes you have certain amount of admiration for Stuxnet’s authors. They’re very good at their work and brought their A game to this one. This is why German security firm Langner calls it the “hack of the century” (see that link for more on the PLC attack). Roel Schouwenberg of Kaspersky says “I’d call it groundbreaking.”
Finally, it was also noticed by many that Stuxnet has an unusual geographical distribution:

An American in Paris Says Au Revoir to His Laptop | AllThingsD
Earlier this month, my wife and I took a 10-day working vacation to Paris, and for the first time in many years, I decided to go away for a week or more without a laptop. Instead, I resolved to rely on only an Apple iPad tablet, my smartphone and a small digital camera.
Overall, my attempt to substitute a tablet for a laptop was a big success, and I’d do it again for a short trip or working vacation. As tablets get better, this will only become easier. For instance, Microsoft is working on a touch-based tablet version of Windows that could make the slates even better laptop replacements.

Eric Schmidt – The Colbert Report – 9/21/10 | Comedy Central
Transcript: Stephen Colbert Interviews Google’s Eric Schmidt On The Colbert Report | searchengineland.com
Colbert: Now you famously said, and I completely support this, the idea that some day, young people instead of having privacy, for the things that they put up on Facebook, being able to expunge that, since once it’s up there, it exists forever, that one day they’ll just erase their histories and change their names, and they’ll be scot free.
Schmidt: It was a joke.
Colbert: Stares in silence.
Schmidt: And it just wasn’t very good.
Colbert: I guess that’s too hip for the room.
Schmidt: It just wasn’t a very good joke.

[Steve jobs ]
Apple’s Jobs: 1,000 No’s on Way to Triumph | TheStreet
What is the top innovation secret of Steve Jobs?
Gallo: Steve jobs once said the secret to innovation is saying no to one thousand things, which means he focuses just on those products that mean something to his customers and to his clients. That also means eliminating the clutter. That’s why iPods, iPhones and iPads are so easy to use. Because instead of adding more features, which is what the vast majority of companies are doing, they actually eliminate features to make it easier to use.

The Seabird, then, introduces a few possibilities into how user interaction might evolve with the advancing motion capture and projector driven innovation in the market. Can Android change the distribution of profit among phone vendors? | asymco
Some assume that the future belongs to the Koreans but we see that the relatively small amount of profit that Samsung has (less than RIM actually) has not changed much. HTC is also shown to be a steady performer but not having displaced much from competitors.
Will Android change this picture? As I’ve argued before, Android is most attractive to the unprofitable and the strategically constrained. Can having undifferentiated new products change this? As Nokia is unlikely to license Android, and RIM seems very unlikely and Apple is out of the picture, the only possible contenders are Samsung, LG, HTC, Motorola and Sony Ericsson.

Apple’s destructive power | MarketWatch
Apple Inc. is a Death Star. It pulls in most of what comes into its orbit and either overtakes or assimilates it.
The success of the company is particularly spectacular because it is largely a four-product enterprise, consisting of the iPad, iPod, Mac, and iPhone. It also produces a suite of supporting software that includes its OSX, the Safari browser, iTunes, and the App Store. These non-hardware products knit together the “iProduct” universe.
